There is something wrong with me. I just designed the ColdCAM v1 nine days ago and here I am building another from the ground up.But, after I share my initial design with some friends, ideas were sparked and I had to revisit some of my previous sketches to build out a more fully “featured” camera body.

New additions include:

  • A leaf spring supported pressure plate

  • New lens cone design and mounting equipment

  • Completely new body with hinged film door

  • A film door release lever

  • and finally a spring activated wedge under each film advance knobs (i’ll explain this in a minute)

As you can see, this body is substantially different the my previous iteration. The addition of a vertically swinging film door also required the ability to pull up both of the film advance knobs so that the film could be place into the camera without the need to remove the top plate, like in version 1 required. The film advance knobs are bother spring activated now so that they snap back down and hold the film tightly in place.

To keep the film taut, I also added grooved channels to the bottom of the film advance knobs which comes in direct contact with a small wedge attached to a spring which pushes it upward into the grooved channel. This function as a break for the film advance knobs.

They allow you to freely spin the knobs in the correct direction, but if you try to spin them the other, the wedge will stick into the grooves on the underside of the film advance knobs, effectively stopping the knob from moving. These little wedges also allow the user to pick up any slack in the film by twisting it 1 or 2 clicks.

I’m sure version 3 will be on its way soon. This 3D printer can’t show up fast enough!
